Prey & Hey Arnold

Prey & Hey Arnold

Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! In today’s episode, we're embarking on a journey through the wilderness of cinema to uncover the top 5 most formidable predators to ever stalk the silver screen. We’ll then venture into the depths of "Prey," the latest entry in the iconic Predator franchise, before lightening the mood with a nostalgic look back at the animated classic, "Hey Arnold!"

Top 5 Predators in Film:

  1. The Predator from "Predator" (1987) - The original jungle stalker that blends high-tech hunting with primal instincts, setting the bar for extra-terrestrial hunters.
  2. The Xenomorph from "Alien" (1979) - H.R. Giger’s nightmarish creation remains one of the most terrifying and efficient killers in sci-fi history.
  3. The T-Rex from "Jurassic Park" (1993) - Spielberg resurrected cinema's most iconic dinosaur as a towering, relentless force of nature.
  4. The Shark from "Jaws" (1975) - The great white that made an entire generation think twice about stepping into the ocean, proving that the most frightening predators come from the depths.
  5. The Velociraptors from "Jurassic Park" (1993) - Smart, fast, and terrifyingly coordinated, these dinosaurs showcased the lethal cunning of nature’s hunters.

Main Feature - Prey (2022):
"Prey" takes us back to the roots of the Predator franchise, setting the stage centuries ago in the Comanche Nation. It’s a refreshing take that combines the survival and hunting elements intrinsic to the Predator lore with a historical backdrop, offering a unique perspective on the clash between alien technology and human ingenuity. The film has been praised for its strong character development, particularly the protagonist, a skilled female warrior, and for revitalizing the franchise with its innovative storytelling and breath-taking action sequences.

Kids TV - Hey Arnold!
Switching gears to something a bit more urban and a lot less predatory, "Hey Arnold!" offered '90s kids and their parents a heartfelt look at life through the eyes of Arnold, a city kid with a head shaped like a football, and his diverse group of friends. The show was celebrated for its nuanced portrayal of urban life, tackling issues like bullying, family dynamics, and the value of community with humour and grace.

Whether you’re in the mood for a thrilling hunt, a dive into a franchise’s new territory, or just a trip down memory lane with some animated friends, today’s episode has something for everyone. So, join us as we explore the predators that haunt our cinematic dreams, celebrate the latest chapter in a storied franchise, and reminisce about the simpler times of after-school cartoons. Prey

Reegs: Welcome to Bad Dad's Film Review, the podcast that needs no introduction, which is good news for me because this week I barely have one. This week we're starting things off by taking a look at the top five predators to grace the screen, be they alien, human, beast, or Harvey Weinstein. Then after that our main feature has us sinking our mandibles into stealth predator sequel Prey, starring the fantastic Amber Midthunder, and we close things off with a look at rugby headed cartoon classic Hey Arnold, because Arnold, really.

Basically, that's the level we're working on. All that's left to do is introduce this week's flaccid foursome. First up, he still owes Moses a fiver. It's old Gray Balls Dan. Next up, it's better if you just look at him, really, Chris. And Sidey, you've recently joined a cult which believes that Disneyland Paris is the site of a secret intercontinental ballistic missile launching facility.

How is that working out for you?

Sidey: Good.

Reegs: Good. Excellent.

Dan: It's a blast, Yeah.

Reegs: And then there's me e Hello? Me, me . There's me, me.

Sidey: Eats.

Episode 400 was good, wasn't

it? Yeah,

Dan: it? was a cracker.

Sidey: cracker. Yeah. On the march now to episode 500.

Yeah.

Reegs: I enjoyed 401 actually having just talked about predator this week. 'cause we've got all predatory and that was good fun talking about that, wasn't

Dan: Stone Cold

Sidey: think the Enthusiasm came through. Yeah. Mmm.

Dan: And, and it will do for, for this, this kind of week's theme I'm sure. Have you been watching anything good on the on the box?

Sidey: No, I've had

a more musical

focus this week.

So

haven't watched anything other than homework.

Dan: I caught up a little bit with the Samurai stuff that I was watching, show Gun.

And I also watched last night for the first time with my daughter who framed Roger Rabbit.

Reegs: Oh.

Sidey: Who did frame him.

Dan: And well, I'm not going to spoil it but I wrote I did say to her look There's a really scary bit at the end. Because I remember being really scared by christopher lloyd's eyes. And it actually wasn't

Sidey: scary It's the shoe in the dip is the

really traumatising

Dan: horrible.

Yeah. Nelly was quite upset about that little shoe going in the dip.

Sidey: Did

you tell her the interesting fact about the LaserDisc version of

this film?

Dan: I no I didn't what was the interesting fact

Sidey: Laserdisc? You can see Disc Rabbit nude.

Yeah. We, we've mentioned it many times on the podcast. Yeah.

Over the past

Cris: this and I don't even know what you're talking

about.

Dan: I'll have to start listening back.

Cris: keyframe No, I don't know what that is.

Sidey: Oh, it's amazing. It's an all time great.

Is

Cris: that a cartoon?

Sidey: Yes.

Reegs: And

Sidey: And, and not a cartoon as well.

at the

Dan: And I tell you what, the,

Cris: is it a porno or what?

Sidey: Yes.

Dan: Is similar, but the animation and live Is

Sidey: Action.

Dan: Action. It still stands out. I don't think they'd be able to do it better today. It's still

Sidey: No,

Dan: No, that's right.

Reegs: Yeah,

Cris: watched quite a few, actually, things, which,

actually, knowing my memory, it is really difficult to remember all this. I've watched last night when, I actually came to the market thinking that we have to do the

Dan: yeah. You turned up 24 hours

Cris: Yeah, I turned up 24 hours early and Dan was having family dinner and I just broke into their house basically. So I did apologize. So sorry about that. I was,

Dan: CCTV

cameras caught you.

We, we didn't release the

Cris: I did say to you, I'm probably the only Romanian person that breaks into someone's house and actually doesn't steal

Sidey: steal anything,

Cris: I left some biscuits and some water, which is not a lot.

I watched a movie last night after I got home, a movie called driven from 2018 thriller slash comedy. It says it is with Jason Sudeikis,

Dan: Okay,

Cris: Judy Greer, and some other people.

Dan: People

Cris: It's about the DeLorean car man. I've never heard of this guy. I've never heard of all this story and apparently it's based on this man and whatever.

So it was fairly

Sidey: He just exploited their tax loopholes didn't he? And grants

Cris: It

doesn't really tell you what he did, the Lorian guy. It tells you about the, his friend who is, it's quite a cool, I don't know. Have you seen that? Any of you seen it? It's actually quite a cool way of presenting the movie because it's the story of his best friend who

is

an FBI informant who ends up catching him, the DeLorean guy to get involved into a drug deal and he gets arrested and then the testimony of his best mate, who is FBI informant doesn't convict him anymore.

And it's like a whole thing and everybody gets a happy ending basically. But it's, it was quite good

Dan: love a happy

Reegs: You've seen a lot of movies where everybody finishes with a happy ending, haven't you Dan? Yeah.

Cris: I've been in a few movies with a happy ending as well. I've also watched Physical 100.

Reegs: the

Cris: Yes, the the Korean

Reegs: load of buff Korean guys. It's a load of

Cris: And girls.

Reegs: And girls

Cris: Yes. Yeah, I didn't they have Sexy Yama in it. So I had to watch it.

Reegs: Mmm. Sexy Arma.

Cris: Sexy Yama is Yasuhiro Akiyama. He goes in the, in the, in this one by Song Cheom Bo or something like that, who he is the son of Korean.

Immigrants, but he is a Japanese citizen, but his family was from South Korea. So he speaks both and he

Sidey: do you see his dick?

Cris: No, but he's really buff though. And he's

Sidey: of buff guys.

I was thinking of

Cris: UFC fighter. He's an MMA legend and One of the, the legends in Asia, not only in this in this series. It's actually quite interesting.

It's too long for me. It tells you all the, no, no, I didn't see his dick. The whole thing is like an American ninja kind of thing. Have you ever seen any of

Reegs: it? No, but it? keeps getting like thrust at me.

Cris: Well,

listen, if you're into buff, naked Asian dudes and girls, The girls are not taking their tops off, but it's, it's actually alright. I didn't finish this whole series, I probably won't bother to see who wins it, but it's, it's quite good.

Sidey: Okay, what about you riggs?

Reegs: Rich?

Dan: series. I probably won't bother

Sidey: just looks dreadful to me.

Dan: see

Cris: John Cena in it.

Dan: wins

Reegs: I

Dan: it, but

Sidey: the original you've

not seen no, maybe that could be a double bill that we could do

Cris: I didn't even know that's a remake.

Dan: 5,

Cris: Is it?

Sidey: top five Houses.

Reegs: it's

Sidey: it's a Swayze.

Cris: Is it? I've never even heard of it. I just thought this is, wow, this is a new movie.

Dan: No.

Sidey: It is that, but it's also

Dan: A remake of an old movie, with a

Cris: I

Reegs: seen it for a long time but I

Dan: got Conor McGregor in this

Sidey: Yeah, that puts me right off.

Reegs: I've

Dan: don't know. I watched the trailer it it

Cris: Yeah, it does put me off, but I

Dan: I don't know whether it does put you off

Sidey: I'm telling you.

No,

Dan: i'm not sure it does sidey.

Sidey: does, Si. I'll think about it. Let's have

Dan: let's have a think and while we think we can drink

Sidey: last week was Top 5 Celebrations. And, Beaver, He's a Top five Celebration norms from Spectre, James Bond

movie. And Also, the animation Coco, I've not seen that one. And he loved the Firework content last week.

And Darren Leafley says the Italian Job. They complete the Job. They have some lols, And then the bus.

ends up precariously balancing And its cuts fade to black, doesn't it? Yeah.

Reegs: Week as well that I wish I'd mentioned. The shawarma scene after the

Sidey: Oh yeah, yeah, that's a good one actually. Good shout. So let's put in I don't like,

hmm, I think

it's Spectre.

Cris: Yeah.

Beaver in with a shout,

Sidey: Well done,

Dan: Nice work

Sidey: well done. Lethally as well, I just don't like the Italian job particularly.

Cris: I've never watched it.

Dan: noms. You've never seen that one as

Sidey: Also has a remake.

with

Marky Mark and

the Funky Bunch.

Cris: Oh yeah, I wouldn't watch that.

Sidey: Right, should

we do,

what are we doing? Top 5 Predators.

let's do that.

Cris: five.

Sidey: I'll start the ball rolling then with one of my favorite topics, which is the Borg from Star Trek. yeah, okay.

Starting off in Star Trek, next gen.

Dan: Right, they're frightening,

Sidey: They're predatory on like an intergalactic

Reegs: Yeah.

Sidey: They

assimilate.

And they did let you know. ahead of The assimilation but they do do it, and they're they're non discriminatory, they'll

assimilate everyone.

Dan: everyone.

Yeah,

Sidey: and

when they first came about, they were this, like, hideous, unstoppable force, and they've been, like,

gradually like neutered

as the,

as the

series went on, but started off as like, one of the fucking really great, Yeah.

Yeah, they

Reegs: villains in the

Sidey: really scary, Like you say, unstoppable. they would, learn that, and they would be able to counteract that, and then that, you know, you couldn't do that anymore, to the point where you were completely fucked. But Yeah, they just they, they sort of chipped away at it, and they, because they were so good, and this is the problem that the series have with things like this, is that you, you keep relying on

them.

when other plotlines aren't so good, so oh, we'll go back to that. But for a while, like, fucking 10 out Thanks.

Reegs: Well, I'm going to start probably in the most obvious place you can think of, which is Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Yeah, Knuckles, absolutely. When Dr. Robotnik returns as you'll remember

Sidey: I haven't seen, is this the second film you mean? yeah.

I haven't seen the sequel yet.

Dan: I've not

seen any of these. Are they worth watching?

Really?

Reegs: are. They are pretty good. Idris Elba is so sexy as Knuckles. And for a while, this was Sonic was my daughter's, like, my youngest daughter's absolute favorite movie.

She really loved the first one, the second one. Watching a movie with her was, it was better to just watch her watching the movie than watch the actual movie, and she would Try and read their self up in the kitchen and run like that sort of thing. Anyway, but knuckles is like basically becomes trained in all forms of combat.

He's like a superior hedgehog to, to other ones. So well, they have like this absolute knockout fight. But of course Sonic is going to triumph in the end through the power of friendship or something.

Dan: Brilliant. It's heartwarming, isn't it? I would go dun duh, dun duh, da da da da da daaaah, George!

Sidey: Bruce. The shot

Dan: would be the the ultimate kind of

Sidey: He's like, they're, that's an ap.

Well, I say that. great whites that the apex predator, but

then

did you see the, the orca took

Dan: Taking 'em down big

Sidey: Yeah. which normally they would do as a group, but that one just went solo.

Yeah.

So Maybe the orca is in fact the AP

Dan: free Willy kind of thing. Okay. Well take your pick out of big fish

But I, I like Jaws. I mean, jaws were, I went to see, I think it might have been Jaws, the Revenge at the cinema. That's the one with Michael Kane. Yeah. Course we might all Kane and he don't want to do it like that. And. It's like in that movie George is remembering and taking revenge on people and they're saying look they don't they don't remember they're not

Sidey: not

out of it.

Dan: Yeah but this is with Michael Caine so so it's a little bit different that was my Michael Caine impression I'll leave it there.

Chris?

Cris: there. Death angels in a quiet place

Reegs: Yeah.

Cris: are a hostile and ferocious species of extraterrestrial things. And I would imagine all of you have seen at least one

of

Reegs: Yeah. I've only

Cris: I've only seen the first one.

Reegs: first one. It's going to be my next normal as it

Sidey: No, have you seen

Cris: the first one

or the I think there's Apparently there's a third one coming out. I didn't even know there was a second one.

Sidey: A second one.

it's

Reegs: Maybe.

Sidey: mean,

quieter place.

Cris: But that, and also the I can't really remember the name of those beings in I

feel so bad for saying this, but what is that Will Smith?

I am legend. Is that what it's called?

Sidey: Yeah. those

Cris: The zombies there. Those things are quite frightening. Despite the fact that that was when I actually enjoyed watching a Will Smith movie. So I will put that reluctantly. I will

Reegs: They're more zombies than predators though, aren't they? I mean, it's a What is a, what makes a predators something

Cris: Well, they, they do

Sidey: something?

they

hunt, they

Cris: hunt people.

Reegs: do they. Alright. Okay. Fair

Cris: think that's, that's,

Reegs: alright. Predate them

Dan: side

it's come

Sidey: back to me.

Dan: but I mean, I could step in with

Sidey: with Piranha

Dan: if you like, if

Sidey: With what?

Dan: Piranha.

Sidey: Have you seen that movie? I've

Dan: I watched

Sidey: I haven't seen it, no. The

Dan: youngster. It's it's like a B

Reegs: James Cameron.

Dan: was it James Cameron? It must have been really early James

Reegs: 1980 I

Dan: Yeah, II watched this as a youth and we went

Sidey: Timeline doesn't add up. but Go ahead.

Dan: Well,

what what it was what it was was.

I was in Manchester with my like family over there. And basically there was a video shop at the end of the street and they just let you hire anything, you know, it was like, if you had a quid, you could have whatever film you wanted. And we took all kinds of,

you know, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, Ninja movies, whatever he could, and Predator Piranha was one.

And it was just classic movie and. You know young people in the in the stream just frolicking around and then underwater scenes of these little fish just ripping the shreds out

Sidey: Are they freshwater

fish?

Dan: fresh water fish. And yeah, it stuck with me that one It's it's been a long long time since seen it may be worth a revisit.

Sidey: But they did Piranha 3D, didn't they? then? A long time after the fact.

Reegs: Was that Eli Roth, maybe? Something like that. I've seen it, it's good. It's got a scene where a woman with silicone tits has them attacked by the piranha,

Dan: Right. Well, I haven't seen it back since, since I was that young, so it might be interesting to see how it stands up.

Reegs: Chronicle, did you ever see that movie? It was a 2012 found footage superhero thing made by Josh Trank, who went on to direct the Fantastic Four reboot. And Max Landis, what a pair of fucking bellens. And in it, he is I can't remember the character's name, but it's Dane DeHaan, he is a self described apex predator and similarly explore, exploring the same theme of like superheroes at the, you know, gone like, what if Superman, but a dick is Brightburn and the boys, which Homelander, the character is obviously I'm thinking of, and I'd mention it also because it was the first episode, the pilot episode was directed by By Dan Trachtenberg, who did this week's movie Prey, so nice little bit of synergy there.

Sidey: Nice.

Cris: 300, the movie the wolf, when the young Leonidas goes to hunt the wolf and it's one of the biggest wolves. I don't know, I can't do that voice, but even me sounding croaky like that, I still can't do that.

Dan: can't do that. It's

Cris: Yeah, it's a big wolf. He looks really, really scary and dangerous. It's a predator and he kills it.

So he's bigger than that predator. I've got Zed in Pulp Fiction, which is a man, and he looks like a predator by his actions when he rapes Ving Rhames. And I

Reegs: I think that's a good one.

Cris: know what

to say about that, but that's him and the storekeeper. I can't remember the storekeeper's name, the guy with the beard. The bunny, oh no, the spider caught a few flies.

I can't remember his name. You know what I'm

Reegs: what his name

Cris: Them two are predators, but I remember Zed because of the keys and

Sidey: ZI haven't seen that film for such a long time

Well. feels is definitely Jira rewatch.

Cris: Yes, yeah I think that's a good scene with with a predator and I have another one no country for old man Anton Chigurh, who is a predator because he can't be stopped once he's, he's another man who, who is, I wouldn't say he preys on, on people per se, as in like, But he is a kind of like a maniac

Reegs: He's a sort of personification of relentless, you know, unstoppable violence and the force of nature and all that sort

of

Cris: Trying to kill anything and everything that has been targeted. Yeah. So that's what I have.

Sidey: What about a rabbit?

the killer rabbit of Caerbannog, from Monty

Python and the

Holy Grail.

Reegs: Yes, that was a

Sidey: Seemingly harmless rabbit, but is in fact a

vicious predator.

I think it kills quite a lot of

Dan: Yeah, it kills a lot of knights and things,

Sidey: so that one, also had jaws.

And then what

about, Terminators. The T 800s?

Reegs: 800

Sidey: I was hunting down literally the prey is Sarah Connor and t1 t1000 then

Reegs: I immediately went there, the T

Sidey: Because He's, like, even more kind of scary, I think. And that's like a perfect film

but flipping it to be chasing down the t800

To stop.

something

Reegs: that's

Sidey: Yeah, that's the one. Yeah. I keep seeing that meme of Sarah Connor looking through the wire fences.

Like, look at this,

no one on their phones.

Reegs: no one on their

Sidey: just going about living their lives Brilliant. Yeah. Epic, predatory.

Like stalking and

murdering Terminator.

Yeah.

T 1000

Dan: Monty, he was a bit predatory as

Reegs: Yes, he was

Dan: in ner and I particularly when he gets I up in the, in the room in Penrith, up in the little house.

And

Reegs: are you the stone or the sponge?

Dan: Exactly. WNO sent him, the last one I have from a

Cris: The last one I have is from a TV series called Mindhunter and they're all predators. The killers, not the FBI agents. I'm not going to go through the

Dan: go through the list of names. Yes, yeah,

Cris: yeah, in the FBI program, how they invented the word serial killer, how they invented all these profiling and all that. I can't remember the reason why they

It's very good. I thought it was very

good.

Dan: I was surprised they didn't recommission it for another series. I think they might have done one or two series, but it was,

Cris: just one season and it was meant to be. I think there was meant to be another one and then I can't remember if if the fear was that they're glorifying these. actual predators because they had Charles Manson, they had Ed Kemper, they had the BTK killer. There's like all these,

Reegs: yeah, it's a little bit fucking in

Cris: it's almost like, it's almost like a who's who of serial killers in, in prison and all that.

So that's

Sidey: the one. Well, they've probably done all the big ones and there's

Reegs: Yeah, it's like true crime

Cris: that's, that's the one that, and all these people are convicted human predators. So that's the last one I have.

Reegs: got a movie about one of the most important topics in America, which is women making up sexual assault claims against rich white men. It's a disclosure. Do you remember that? The Michael Douglas one presumably written by an incel but talking about, yeah it's the one where Demi Moore is computer scientist, Michael Douglas's boss and won't, you know, won't

Sidey: take no for

Reegs: And then when he turns her down later, she ruins his life. A very important topic. And I also thought part erotic thriller, part neo noir wild things. Do you remember that?

Sidey: Do I ever? Yeah.

Reegs: Certain sequences. That was kind of about Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Matt Dillon. I was going to say Matt Damon, but Dylan, you son of a bitch.

Yeah, that's the one where they accuse him of rape. So, these are sort of predatory women

Sidey: I remember something about a swimming pool but yeah.

Reegs: Yeah, I Also,

remember something about swimming pool And then it's got like the most ridiculous amount of twists that all happened in the last 10 minutes of the movie or whatever completely

Sidey: rewatch of that

one, I

Reegs: Yeah, yeah, so that was that stuff

Sidey: All the monster serial killers from all the films ever, I'm thinking Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, those ones, The Xenomorph, of course, from the Alien

franchise, I watched the trailer for the New one, Romulus,

Reegs: trailer for

Sidey: gonna be shit,

and I'll

Reegs: Romulus.

Sidey: really enjoy it,

Reegs: going to be shitting,

Sidey: it.

had, like, facehuggers and stuff and

things, yeah, I mean

Reegs: it, yeah. Yeah, I like the facehuggers and

Sidey: first watch, I thought, is this a fan made? thing? No, it can't be Ghostface is Like an interesting take on those guys

because, not the Xenomorphs obviously. Because it's different

People each time Yeah.

taking on the mantle of the in scream

Dan: Yeah,

Sidey: I think I'm up, I think I'm right up to date

Reegs: up to date.

Sidey: Well General

tager

Reegs: in it. I'm

Sidey: It's like it's this stuff and things. What about montgomery burns?

From The Simpsons. Is he

kind of predatory? preys on springfields and exploits

Reegs: got a trapdoor in their office is a bit predatory, I would say.

Dan: bit predatory. Sideshow Bob, would he

Sidey: Yeah, he's stalking The Simpson kids all the time.

isn't he? And I've got a different Bob.

Twin Peaks Bob.

Reegs: Mmm.

Dan: Peaks Bob. Right. Never Yeah, I know.

Cris: Yeah.

Shocking.

Sidey: he's a strange one, because he He

you don't really know what he is

or

how he's come about, but he kind of represents

Evil

in inverted commas, and he possesses people and causes them to do bad shit.

And the guy that played him is like fucking

terrifying,

horrendously

scary looking dude, and he was just like a stagehand. On set, And David Lynch saw

him and was like, right.

and changed all around to get him in. Some of the most terrifying shit ever in that

program. So immense. Yeah. Yeah.

Dan: I've seen ever in that program. series.

Sidey: epic, epic series.

Dan: Crap and I would,

Sidey: You might watch it and think it's fucking crap and I would, yeah, I get it.

But, It's just, it's just like, you know, treading a fine line between fucking being ridiculous. But yeah I'm a big fan.

Reegs: Well, just a couple we did on the pod under the skin. Jonathan Glazer's movie. She was predatory to which she was luring young men.

And the nice to talk to Adam Pearson to their death. And Jonathan Glazer has recently been in hot water. Also we did on the pod. Pod and believe it or not the subject of a minor disagreement in the group over intellectual property rights cocaine bear which takes the idea of what if a predator, but on cocaine which, which was good.

And I thought, is Godzilla a predator?

Sidey: he's a

Cris: ally.

Reegs: What about sometimes he's an ally and sometimes he's

Sidey: not

Reegs: you know, but is he a predator? I don't know. That's that was when I was starting to get a bit

Sidey: when I was starting to get a bit Shining.

Dan: With an ax quite predatory.

Reegs: Oh, Pennywise the clown from it.

Dan: Yeah,

Sidey: seen it.

Reegs: He feeds on human emotions and fears and stuff. The fears of children to grow stronger. That sounds pretty predatory to me.

Dan: Yeah.

Sidey: Agent Smith from

Matrix. More Yeah, I suppose so. Yeah. Okay,

Oh, fuck him off

then. I'm, I think I'm ready to nominate my

choice.

Reegs: Yeah.

Dan: Well, I'm gonna go, George, the revenge for mine.

Sidey: ONIX. Okay.

Nice. Chris.

Cris: Zed

Reegs: Uh,

Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

Sidey: Cylon number 6 from Battlestar Galactica, Played by Trisha

Helfer. Uh, trying to

exterminate everyone.

A little bit like the Borg, but sexier.

Reegs: Yeah, no, I've watched a bit of

Dan: I've watched a bit of

Sidey: Yeah. And we'll just complete the circle next week.

Dan: circle next is the movie. What

Sidey: little bit today. Okay. Yes, we are.

perfect. This is the movie. Well, did we talk about snacks? Oh,

Dan: Sweets, we still got those wham beans

Sidey: Yep.

Dan: from yesteryear.

Cris: Good? I didn't, I've

Sidey: not sure. Are they

Dan: Okay, yeah, they're they're not too bad. Yeah, they've they've they're not as as wham bar sour

Reegs: Nothing touches those French things.

Sidey: We've got pretzels

in chocolate, which is a new addition, we haven't

had those

Dan: Yeah, we've got some healthy snacks. I had a pie. doesn't really count. Cashew nuts.

Reegs: You've been eating a lot of nuts, I've noticed.

Yeah.

Dan: I've been feasting on nuts.

And we've got M& M

Sidey: Sort of in a hunter gatherer way.

Yeah.

That segues very nicely into this week's

movie.

Dan: Don't write these. This just

Sidey: still in the, predator verse. Yes. Oh,

Cris: Yes. Although this is

Sidey: Yeah, back

Cris: Yeah, back in time no?

Sidey: no? This is at least

Dan: a hundred years

Sidey: hundred years before.

Yes,

that means that

Cris: the outer space bit.

Sidey: not the same opening. We don't get the outer space bit

right out of the gate

like we do

in the first page of this one. We get some spiel, don't

we

Reegs: Yeah. we do.

Dan: yeah, we

Sidey: And then we get, well, we get a nice landscape you know, a shot of,

Reegs: Great Plains. The

Sidey: Plains, and I'm thinking

Cape Bush, the big sky. You know, you get the big vistas and stuff. It looks,

cool.

Reegs: It did look great.

Dan: but there was then the Firebird that is coming out

Reegs: Well, we see her throwing her tomahawk in the forest and she's playing with her dog Sari.

Dan: and she is

Reegs: And Sari's, Sari's tail gets caught in a bear

Sidey: trap.

Well, I have a dog

in front of

her,

Reegs: banish the dog from the room and then restart the movie.

Dan: Yeah, and

for the people wondering who she is, she is,

Reegs: Amber Midthunder. A

Sidey: best name ever.

Yeah.

Reegs: There's two with great names in this because her brother, the character, the actor is Dakota Beavers, I think his name is. It's

great name.

Cris: Wow.

Dan: You shouldn't really need to have like a stage name or anything for that, should you? Or a character name, you just go with your

Sidey: name. Yeah, just go with

it.

Dan: it's that strong.

Sidey: Yeah, so she's obviously got designs on being a hunter.

Reegs: Yes. Well, yeah, so she, the, the dog gets his tail caught in a bear trap. And she gets a free, it's all important because every one of these moments is going to add up and pay off in the finale.

And then she sees the incoming predator ship. We see it like de cloak as it comes through the atmosphere and she sees it and she will later refer to it as a thunderbird telling her in her mind that she's A sign from the heavens that she's ready for this Kutamiya, which is like a rite of passage for, for hunters in their community.

Dan: and and basically the the task is to hunt something that is hunting you.

So, you know whether it be a big cat or or whatever that would have been around at

Sidey: Well, that's what her brother says to him. doesn't, he said you know, it's all very well thrown.

You axe around at

a

tree or whatever, but the real test is when something's Coming for you and you're able to,

Dan: you've gotta stare it down and fight it. Fight it

Sidey: do the

Reegs: Yeah, and the village are not very supportive of her aspirations to

be a part of the hunt. Even her brother, I think the best relationship and other character in the movie, her brother Tabe, he's kind of sometimes supportive. And sometimes not certainly not as denigrating as, as the rest of the, his friends are.

Sidey: very clear gender. Roles

Reegs: the

Sidey: in the community

in there the women are the healers and the men are the hunters.

Dan: And

and going off the healers when the dog which is kind of a best friend

Sidey: Yeah

Dan: You know a real sidekick of hers gets his tail caught. She's got some medicine there and We find out that she is a bit of a medicine lady and she can a herbalist. Thank you Yeah, she she can do all that stuff

Cris: Yeah, you two are a bit of a herbalist as well.

Reegs: So yeah we do get a bit of brother sister relationshipy stuff, and he really is the only other character you're gonna care about in the movie apart from the dog.

He doesn't kind of completely support hunting, he's sometimes a bit competitive, he's sometimes a bit condescending but anyway. Not far from the village, the predator arrives. And we get, like, a bit of digital animal stuff, which I kind of quite liked. I didn't like the digital critters, but I like this.

We get an ant that's hunted by a mouse that's hunted by a snake, that's then horribly gored by the predator. So

Dan: yeah. And To, to start. There's a a is it a bear, they

Reegs: No, It's a mountain lion.

Dan: mountain lion. Because somebody gets, somebody gets injured, don't they?

Or somebody doesn't return.

Reegs: his name was. It made me chuckle. Sorry about that. But that was his name, Pooey. And he, he's abducted, they think, by a mountain lion.

So they, Dakota Beavist Tarbey leads the hunting party. And she says Amber Midthunder Nari says she wants to go along. And

Dan: they're like, no, but she goes along anyway.

And,

Reegs: She says she can get his, she can tend to his wounds, basically, so.

Dan: yeah. And, and so they, they head off into the, into the bush and I think she finds the snake, doesn't she? And she says. And she's a really good tracker and she's saying, well, what the fuck did that? It's not anything that I know. I mean, and they're saying, oh, it's probably like a wolf or whatever.

And they're no, it's, it's not that it would, it would take the whole

Sidey: been skinned.

It's like a predator, it's been skinned. Yeah, like we've seen before.

Dan: and

They're not really heeding the warning maybe because she's a girl, maybe because they will feel they, they know better, but

Reegs: And also because pretty quickly they find Pooey who is kind of wounded but still going. And she gives him the orange flower.

Dan: That's right. And this, this orange flower she'd already been sort of tasked in, in finding another time, isn't she? And it is. Got some qualities in, in which

Cris: freezes the blood or,

Dan: the, the blood and, and, and slow you right down.

Yeah.

Reegs: So,

Anyway, they resolve to catch this mountain lion and it's Naru's plan to sort of bait it and set a trap and then hide in the trees above it

Cris: and set a trap and then hide in the trees above it.

You see her catch a

Reegs: Well, we see her catch, we see her catch a load of rabbits and stuff.

Sidey: caught a he is shot an eagle or something red for kit

Dan: and stuff. He's caught a he's shot an eagle or something. She sees it as well this kite flying and he shoots and she goes he goes see you were too slow and he goes Yeah, I was just waiting for it to circle back. You've got to go across the river now to go and get

Sidey: that and

Dan: she was like Right.

Yeah, so Yeah She is a tactical kind of hunter,

Reegs: And observational as well.

She's constantly taking in her surroundings and using it to her advantage.

Dan: very off the cuff and gung ho.

Reegs: So they do set the trap and eventually the lion comes. I think it kills one of the hunting party straight away. She ends up fighting it in a tree

Sidey: Yeah,

Reegs: and is kind of knocked unconscious. And then the next we see of her, she's carried back to

Cris: No, she wakes up in a tent.

Dan: Yeah. She wakes up in the wigwam

Reegs: back to the Comanche village by Tabe.

Dan: and and, and then fed the kind of information, look you were. You would meet if it hadn't been for us.

Reegs: Well, he's like declared war. It's a big celebration, right? Because he's got the dead mountain lion and her and he's declared war chief and all this stuff. So

Dan: Blood all over him. Yeah. He's looking the part and he's milking it up. And he even says to her, look. And if it hadn't have been for me, you're out of there. This isn't for you, this game. Just stick to the medicine or whatever, but you, you're not ready for what you think you're ready for. But there's there's another kind of issue that takes them into the, into the forest again a little bit later, isn't

Reegs: Well, Nari's gonna go off on her own and she's gonna come across that. Field of skinned bison. And she's going to find a cigar. Cause so we'll understand that there are some other characters at play. I did wonder who'd set the bear trap at the beginning, because it's clearly not, their people are much more sort of living a more primitive

Sidey: doesn't recognize what it is.

Yeah.

Reegs: And so she comes across and there's a, there's a cigar there as well, but this time it's not like a symbol of masculinity and machismo is a symbol of colonialism in in, in this part of the

Dan: world.

Reegs: Yeah. So, there's a bit of jiggery pokery with the wolf and the predator having a fight.

And doesn't he like, I think he rips its skull out and he's covered in

Dan: right. Well, the, he, the wolf has a go, doesn't it? It it, it doesn't back off. And predator's gone all camouflaged on him. And he does get a bit of a bike 'cause you see some of the green go, but yeah, then you see this just absolute destruction and he rips the spine out of this wolf.

And you realize.

Reegs: And it pretty quickly escalates from there. Naru gets trapped in like some, like, quicksandy, muddy stuff, which I thought they were going to use in the same way that they did

Dan: Oh, like the mud? Yeah.

Reegs: don't. But it does still play to, play in the climax. And she, she manages, because she's improvised this way of like throwing and retrieving her, Tomahawk via this like

rope

Dan: she's weaved some kind of rope which means she can tug on the tomahawk and it comes back into her hands and then she can sling it off to another tree and pull it again. So

Reegs: it's a bit like ths hammer in

Dan: boomerang tomahawk then, isn't it? Yeah, like Thor's hammer or whatever. It keeps coming back in.

Yeah, as she's sinking in this, This this mud it's the last throw of the dice of the tomahawk that just hooks onto some, some tree branches and she manages to pull herself to, to safety out of it. And like you, I thought, Oh, that's brilliant. You know, this is the point where Predator is going to come and she's covered in mud or whatever, but it doesn't work out like that way at all.

You see her kind of washing herself down and cleaning herself off and all the time you're thinking, Oh, she's just making herself Predator bait here, like keep all that mud on you. But she's still unaware

This

kind of creature is out there at this

Reegs: Well, she's got other problems because she's attacked Revenant style by a bear, right? And she has to dodge away. Eventually she sort of swims under this thing, I think into a beaver dam, is it? I wasn't completely And the bear is like hacking away and attacking her and then

Dan: it's snapping and biting at her and she's millimeters just about to get her the predator comes

Reegs: Well, you just hear it's like, it makes like a pained noise and is suddenly dragged off screen. And then as she rises up through the beaver dam to look at it he like breaks his back and he's drenched in blood. I think they did that in one of the other movies as well, didn't they? I think in Shane Black's one with somebody revealed the predator is revealed basically with a river of blood down them.

Dan: just coming down and it just shows because it's a huge bear and,

Reegs: And

I quite like the way the, the predators hunting escalates. He's gone from the snake to the, you know, the wolf to the bear, and now he's getting ready to hunt the most dangerous game on Earth

Dan: on earth. Yeah, people um, well, he, she, she escapes down the river, which must have been freezing cold.

And she eventually goes down a few rapids in, in this kind of icy blue water. And much like Arnie when he comes out of, you know, she's, she's on a riverbank and everything, and she's just. Trying to catch her breath. And the predator then he he goes on for the french next I think doesn't he?

Reegs: Yeah, well they have to

Sidey: gets captured. She

Reegs: gets captured first, yeah. She meets up with the rest of her hunting party, Tarbe, and some of the other guys are out looking for her.

And they're all captured this is where we get the, if it bleeds we can kill it, but where they're being, oh no, is that later where they're being positioned as bait?

Sidey: Yeah, they, well she comes to, well she's, she's prone and just gets the rifle butt

in the in the face. Yeah. Yeah. And

when she comes to, she's caged

And she's by the French people, but they're not speaking French as we would understand it necessarily.

I was only able to pick up a few

words, but

anyway.

Cris: Know? And so

Sidey: no school.

Yeah. And so they're prodding at her and

She's She

fights back and she, she's got kind of grabbed stuff and is trying to, you know, put up a bit of a fight in his cage. And they, at one point I

thought they were going to try and rape her or something. Instead they bring out

someone from another cage, her brother.

Cris: Yes,

Sidey: To

her horror.

Dan: Yeah. And it looks like they're gonna

Sidey: execute him in front

of her. Yeah, Yeah.

Dan: There's a translator there. He

says,

Sidey: you should help us, tell us what's doing all this stuff.

And she's like no.

Dan: they, they, yeah, they end up just taping or tying them to like some tree as bait.

Reegs: Basically, and that's when we get the drop of the line.

If it bleeds, we can kill it in this context. A lot more like it's really macho in the first one. And in this one, it's like a lot more sort of hopeful for them. And I, it can be really clumsy. That kind of callback. Maybe we disagree. I thought it

Sidey: yeah.

It was a bit too, it was just a bit exactly those words. Yeah. but,

Reegs: but mercifully, few of those kind of things or when they did like the mud, it's misdirection

Sidey: or,

Dan: yeah, a lot of, a lot of the time they, they did.

they,

gave a little nod to it, but they didn't use it in the same way and it was just that one line, as you say, that, that linked the two movies through dialogue, and I didn't think they

Sidey: they, like you said, they are used as bait, they're chained

or tied up to a tree. Yeah. And

having seen other predator films, we know that they're unarmed, so they're unlikely to, it's

not going to work as bait

that way.

So the predator does come. But only when he sees the other, the French people

with their rifles, and their pistols.

Reegs: Comically like, because their technological power is overwhelming to the Comanche tribe, but they all fire

Sidey: fire. and they

just stop.

Reegs: there and then they all start to restock their guns.

Dan: powdering their guns again.

Reegs: He

absolutely butchers them. I mean, it's pretty horrific what happens to

Dan: he gets the Wolverine stuff out, doesn't he?

Reegs: The faces going and arms getting chopped off and legs going. And,

Sidey: He's got

a slightly different

design and look to the other predator that we've

Reegs: He's got a sort of bone

Cris: it's lost a lot less armor and the mask is a,

Sidey: skull from something from a different predator film.

it's like lore, you know. And It

seems to be bulletproof.

Dan: Yeah.

Sidey: Yeah.

Dan: And it's also got this kind of laser

Sidey: function

he's he's adapt, adapted it with

some upgrades. Yeah.

Reegs: while they were tied there, there's a good little moment where Naru frees her and Tabe while all of this sort of, or just before all this kicked off. There's like a bear trap there and she's telling a story about how she watched a beaver chew its own leg off to

Sidey: escape a drought,

Reegs: and you think she's going to sever her hand and then she's, you

Dan: Tarbe does but she goes no I'm smarter than a beaver and she just drops a rock in there and is able

Sidey: free herself, Cuts the rope, yeah.

Dan: From the trap and everything.

Reegs: Yeah.

Sidey: There's still loads of carnage going on around them.

Dan: There's loads to do.

Sidey: must be about 20 or 30 of

these

Dan: there's, there was quite a lot of the trappers and

Reegs: Well, and there's also Naru, when she goes back after freeing herself, she goes and John Wick on them all and takes down 3 or 4 of them, doesn't she?

Sidey: Because they've got her dog.

They have.

So she needs to go

Dan: Yeah, very John Wick.

Sidey: And you're thinking when Misty said it, it's

like, fucking please tell me nothing happens to the dog.

Reegs: dog.

Sidey: She

goes back to camp to rescue the dog and there's a few of them there

And like you say, she

takes them out

They batter her a little bit, but she

fucking offs them.

With her clever

tomahawk on a rope trick. Yeah.

Cris: He's had his foot chopped off

Sidey: He shows her the gun.

Cris: in

Sidey: Well, she.

Reegs: he's

had his foot chopped off

Dan: he's in a bad way. He's and she starts putting some medicine on his on his leg. And to be fair to him, he's taken it like a champ because I could be in pieces. You can see the bones and attended all that. And she's sort of patting some of that orange kind of medicine onto it.

Sidey: look that hygienic.

Dan: a little bit into his mouth and said, look, You better have

Reegs: this wrap, you wrap your laughing gear around that

Dan: and yeah, and, and it kind of just puts him in a bit of a, a coma.

Sidey: the camp.

and the translator dude just tries to play dead. until he Fucking tramples on him.

I Thought

that was really funny. And obviously gives himself away and is just like hideously murdered.

I think

he gets the spikes through the,

Reegs: which Raphael are you talking

Sidey: The, The translator? Yeah.

Reegs: But not before She somehow worked out that the, the plant made him invisible for a bit.

Cris: Well yeah, because it cools the blood.

Reegs: I know. Yeah. You can say that, but

Dan: she's

yeah,

Reegs: It's, we will go with it. It's the logic of the movie

Dan: observation again where she just puts two and two together

Cris: I mean, don't get me wrong, I thought it's a bit like, Oh, this is very intelligent,

Sidey: Yeah.

Yeah.

Cris: How else are you going to kill him later on?

Dan: Yeah, so it's not just, it just made me think about, you know, the other Predator movie, whether it was the mud or it was just the cooling property of the mud. Well

Sidey: she's, like you say she's very observant and she has observed the three dots a couple of times. and she's kind of like, what's going on there?

But she is cornered and about to be

Killed off, right?

And

her brother arrives because he'd gone off

to get the horse. And he he comes back

on horse,

Dan: comes back on

Sidey: the air and stabs

I think does he

harpoon he kind of harpoons him. Yeah. like Pretty

brutally.

Dan: Back of the head or something pretty brutally She knocks

Cris: She knocks the mask off.

Sidey: comes off, I think at one point he does put it back on, but it comes off because she shoots him in the head later on.

Dan: Yeah, and she uses

Sidey: Yeah, this is where she sees the the

red light again. But,

another fight ensues.

And you kind of think you know which way it's going to go. And he has to do the big

hero thing.

of saying don't

worry, this is my time.

Because they, you know, obviously believe in spirits

and whatever.

Gives her the hero speech

Dan: No further.

Sidey: and is

Reegs: I go no further

Sidey: fucking horribly, Horribly killed and blood spraying fucking

everywhere.

You can see, I think,

because is he cloaked? the predator and you can see the blood on it. Fucking

Reegs: Yeah, pretty gory stuff.

And then that was the end,

Cris: No, but

Dan: us to death that bit, didn't it?

Sidey: she, after that she now has,

Reegs: This is,

Sidey: has a gun.

Reegs: Yeah, she, this is really the moment where she starts to take back the initiative, right? So we get her main strength as a hunter has been her ability to learn things about the, her prey.

And also she's been on this constant technological upgrade, whereas in predator, we saw them stripped down to more primitive methods. She's been upgrading and innovating and setting traps and all this stuff. And it all gets paid off at the end with, She sets a trap with him with the the French trapper, right?

She cuts off the guy's legs and arms and and lays a trap for him and then fights the predator, drags him eventually into the quicksand

Dan: and, and uses his own mask and against

Reegs: I didn't understand

Cris: and the, the gun and the aiming mechanism are separate, so the aiming mechanism is on, on the actual mask and the gun is on his shoulder, so when he shoots,

Sidey: It's like

bolts though

Reegs: why, why did he forget that at the moment that he pulls the

Cris: yeah,

Reegs: why I didn't understand. But anyway maybe I missed something in the

Dan: she, she's, she lures him into an, an area. Maybe he doesn't realize she's got that and he's just kind of

Reegs: shooting. No, she's, yeah, she, he doesn't know, but she's pre-positioned the mask there and

Dan: And turned it on.

Reegs: and all this stuff.

But how, when he, he knows that when he points a gun at something, it's not gonna go where he is pointing it, it's gonna go where he is,

Dan: something, it's not going to go where he's pointing it, it's going to go where he's Sort of circles around

Sidey: a

spear

Dan: yeah, and and it goes it goes straight and he almost gives it that oh motherfucker moment Doesn't he when he realizes? he's He's done for by his own weaponry,

Sidey: and

Dan: and she heads triumphantly back into the village

Sidey: heads literally.

Yeah, she

Dan: the

Cris: And she's covered in the

Reegs: Yep.

Dan: And covered in the blood. And and everyone's

Reegs: She smashed traditional gender roles on the way

Dan: Yeah,

Reegs: But then the credits show a fairly ominous sequence of

Sidey: well, she goes back to Virge and she's given the whole fucking like.

the

War,

thing and

Reegs: the war chief

Sidey: all that. It's really cool. Yeah. if you stay for the credits cause it does a recap, but then it shows three more shifts coming in and you're like, Oh, they

Reegs: they're all dead then. Yeah.

Sidey: Yeah, did you stay for that bit at the end?

Dan: didn't know what was it?

Sidey: Because it's showing the film

Reegs: it plays

Sidey: It's showing the film back in, in

cave painting sort of things. And if you stay past what's happened in the film, because it shows the decapitated alien and her arriving.

But then it shows them all look up and three ships come in. you're like, oh,

they all got killed

Reegs: Yeah.

Dan: got killed. Yeah.

Right,

Cris: Nice.

Dan: Maybe that's, that's for another Prey 2 or, or something. But this was then the most recent of the Predator Verse

Reegs: And the Predatorverse is a very mixed bag

Dan: It really is. I mean, I've never seen Alien verses Predator or Requiem or,

Reegs: I have.

Dan: the other, any of those others worth watching? I

Reegs: I remember most of those being absolutely dogshit.

I will go to bat a little bit for Shane Black's definite article, The Predator, although that movie is a mess, it has the same kind of big characters that the original Predator has and this movie suffers from not having a little bit only having Naru and Tabe of any interest at all.

Dan: I've seen this before and then I watched it again for the pod the first time around I must say I thought it was pretty I wouldn't go back there but I watched it again for the pod and enjoyed it a lot more maybe because I'd watched the the original Predator before that and I was really into the Predatorverse then and I I enjoyed this actually second time round more than I did the first time and you know I think it's probably the

Leave the predator aside, it'll be one of the stronger offerings then because the rest of them, just on the face of them, the trailers, they look dump.

I mean, alien versus Predator seemed a bit of a joke at the time and I dunno, you've seen it. Yeah.

Sidey: They they pause it.

that the Predator

has created, the Aliens

just

as like the ultimate sport. I enjoyed this a lot. I've seen it before and watched it again for this, I think behind predator.

this is my favorite, like,

The next one. in line. Predator 2, so, so, I turned off Predators, like halfway through, they were

Reegs: little

bit.

Dan: I think this is good

Sidey: And I haven't seen the Predator.

Dan: I think this is good news for the Predatorverse, because it's getting better, rather than going into more shit. It's not just churning. And I hope, because I really

Sidey: I'm okay with No, more predator films

Dan: I think

Reegs: quite like that. There's more to mine in the putting it against different time periods. I think there's definitely something in there that's interesting. Yeah, I think this is a very solidly entertaining action movie with a good bit of like different representation on screen and it's frequently very nice to look at.

I don't remember the score at all, which is you know, disappointing, I guess. Doesn't have the big characters that I think makes the original movie so

Dan: No, nowhere near that.

Reegs: But still really worth watching

Cris: I

was alright. I mean, obviously, I remember the original one and you can't be Schwarzenegger ever. But I can't really say it was too bad, but I don't know. I didn't really enjoy any of the

Sidey: Most, most baffling

Reegs: most, most baffling of all. You don't fancy Amber Midt thunder at all. Do you? Don't, I don't

Sidey: understand.

I don't know actually. We

Reegs: I dunno. She, we should have Googled that first,

Cris: that's not the point, I don't, I don't care. She's

Sidey: She's very

cool.

Cris: pretty, I don't

Reegs: she's pretty and seems pretty cool. Yeah,

Cris: I think the opposite, she's not that cool and she doesn't seem that pretty.

Reegs: It's split

Sidey: it's almost

as if it's in the eye of the. goral

Yeah,

Cris: strong recommend from me.

Reegs: Yeah.

Dan: Yeah, I would still go and check this out.

Sidey: Hmm.

Dan: It's on

Reegs: You're gonna go

Dan: Oh, you're gonna go Predator 2 over this one?

Cris: Oh,

Sidey: It had It

had a

it had a budget,

But it didn't have a box office. I think it went straight to streaming. I don't know if that's because of COVID, or it was always planned to. It seems too nice looking to be not on the big screen.

Dan: big screen.

Danny Glover was Predator

Sidey: too. G Lover, yeah.

Cris: Yeah.

Dan: Well, check

Cris: some other people,

Sidey: I think there was other people.

in it as well. yeah. Yeah. Gary Boosie?

Reegs: Yes.

Cris: so you don't have Gary Busey in this

Dan: No, I might have to to

Cris: Sorry, Amber, but you

Dan: predator too. But

Sidey: watch it, Just go and watch

it.

Yeah, Yeah,

yeah,

Cris: strong recommend.

Sidey: Hey.

Dan: arnold

Sidey: I had never seen this before but I was definitely aware of it.

Reegs: Yeah, I'd seen his strange shaped head.

Sidey: Yeah, is that ever

explained? No. Is is this the

same universe as family guy? Like, Is it

Stewie?

Because

he has a

Cris: Yes, he looks like a piece

Dan: a rugby ball head.

Reegs: Hmm, I don't know. His name's not Stewie,

Sidey: No, I know, but he could have

changed it by DuPont. I thought they'd

Dan: just ripped off the The character here a little bit for, for the first family guy, but this was season one, episode one of Hey Arnold without Arnold Schwarzenegger theme.

Sidey: Yeah.

Reegs: was created by the brother in law of matt groening

Sidey: oh and it has dan castanets as the voice of the dad yes Yeah, that's not his real name. homer simpson's voice

Dan: So this particular episode was focused on around a play that,

Is it his sister that's putting on or,

Reegs: No, she's Love Interest,

Sidey: they fuck. They fuck in one of the later episodes.

Oh, do they?

Yeah.

Dan: Definitely not his sister then. But I've been to school plays this week and,

Cris: Ha ha, I was

Sidey: One, yeah, where that was going. Yeah. Yeah.

Dan: And, and so this was quite apt because my daughter was in a school play.

She was playing the, the, the witch in, in the fairy tale,

Sidey: Of New York. What fairy

Dan: tale trials.

Sidey: mark out of 10 would you give her performance?

12,

Really? You said three before

Dan: Yeah, well now i'm live on air, you know, no she was she was fantastic and and it was really You know great having all the kids together and they all had their their parts to play So seeing this actually it just thought oh, you know, this is basically what i've been watching all

Sidey: they've been cast.

in this as fruit.

Dan: Yeah, yeah.

Sidey: And the whole show is about

different kinds of

Dan: food. That's right. So it It's Arnold and his, his best mate,

Sidey: One

of kid and

play.

Dan: Jeremy

Sidey: He's got an extreme high

top fade.

Dan: a strawberry and a banana and they don't really fancy being fruit when it push

comes

Reegs: a banana and they don't really fancy being fruit when it push comes to him.

Dan: so, night of the play, they bail out and go downtown.

And they get on a

Reegs: Well, they come up with, they, they come up with this plan, don't they? They, they just to sort of accidentally forget to get off at the right stop. Yeah. And they do, but then they don't realize that the right stop, the next stop after school is apparently the end of the line in downtown,

Sidey: And

they

Dan: end of the line. But it's also one of the lessons we've

Reegs: But it's also one of the less salubrious parts of town.

Dan: Yeah, well, they, they expect the bus is just going to turn around and go right back to where it started.

But in fact, it's the end of the line, the bus driver gets out and they're left in as you say not a great part of town. But as they

Reegs: They don't have any spare clothes, they don't have any money,

Dan: and they're dressed as a strawberry and a banana.

Reegs: They're gonna phone one of the parents, but the payphone's been vandalised Somebody's tried to sell them heroin.

Sidey: Yeah,

which they took.

Dan: as they're just outside, they go, Oh, we've got no money. And this guy comes by in a car and, and lobs loads of money at

Reegs: them.

Dan: And they go Oh, that's really nice people downtown. And then like a minute or so later is they've wandered off with this bag of money. Two thugs dressed as a banana in a, in a strawberry turn up and saying, Oh, look, we're just two minutes late, but

Reegs: what are the chances?

Dan: are the chances?

Cris: All the time, no?

Dan: well, it did to me. Yeah. And they go into A store to get some new threads and everything

Reegs: Oh, well, Gerald gets an amazing pair of like high top platforms. They're about that big. They're

Cris: look good.

Sidey: But Disco stew.

Yeah.

Dan: Yeah, that's right. And so they're just having a bit of a laugh downtown they go into like a a fortune teller

Reegs: Yeah. Oh, well that happens after when they're on the run, doesn't it? Yeah.

Sidey: He's enormous, that fortune teller.

Dan: he was a big guy. Yeah

Reegs: it's after they go to the pool hall first. They're spending all their money and all that and that's when the hoods are there. The strawberry and fruit hood, the strawberry and banana hoods are waiting for them.

And that's when they chase him out towards Zamboni Jones, psychic palace. He shouldn't have known they were coming.

Dan: Yeah, well, he does know everything.

He knows they're bringing them a problem. They know they have a problem and it helps Arnold reflect on the fact that he's letting everyone down by not being at the play. So they get in a taxi and they dig out their their strawberry and banana costumes from a skip that they'd thrown them in on the way they see some like, a family that's broken down their car and they throw a load of money at them and they have the exact same reaction as, as Arnold did.

Hey, aren't people downtown really nice? And they make it just in time

Sidey: Just as she's saying,

we're not going to have the

fourth act, because People don't care about it as much as me, blah, blah, blah,

blah.

Dan: And they, they kind of.

Yeah, they, they

take stage, they perform a song that brings the whole play together.

Sidey: Fruit makes you two.

Reegs: Yeah.

Dan: Fruit makes you two and you should follow suit and

Sidey: Yeah, it

Dan: Yeah, it was and it brought the house down.

Everybody was clapping and Maisie looks at him through this

This costume. She's milk. I think and there's a little hole for her head to poke through and she said Arnold you Beautiful, beautiful man, because he saved

the

Reegs: beautiful, beautiful man, because he saved the day.

Do you remember when we were

Sidey: you remember when we were at school, and J. P. Nowatzki and Chris Tucker did a thing, dressed as milk cartons? They had milk cartons on

their heads, do

you remember?

Reegs: heads, do you remember? don't

Sidey: they,

Dan: they sang.

Sidey: But yeah, we had

it was in music.

and

Dan: they brought Arnold to real

Sidey: and they put milk cartons on their head and

sang.

sang

a song about Saddam Hussein.

It

was

so weird.

Dan: Okay.

Cris: that's

Sidey: It

really reminded me of that. Yeah, it was really bizarre.

Dan: It's strong.

Sidey: Hey, good. Hey, Arnold vibes. This was, I liked the animation style

in

this.

Reegs: this. Yes, very good. Also decent representation in this. Also a little bit different as well, because Arnold lives with his grandparents.

And I think that they don't have a lot of money and that sort of

Sidey: sort of thing. Yeah,

Reegs: yeah definitely. wow.

Dan: Yeah, very complex, very complex upbringing yeah, it, it seems to have, you know, maybe influenced as you say family guy a little bit later some of

Sidey: is a

mystery why his head looks like that.

Dan: character

drawings it's quite well written there's obviously a little moral but it's not too

Reegs: preachy

Dan: preachy or cheesy quite like this actually it was

Sidey: It's one of those,

Dan: one episode

Sidey: one

where it's 25 minutes

but it's two parts, It's two distinct Episodes within the thing, yeah,

Dan: and yeah, you know often season one episode one stuff can be a little bit

Sidey: It's not a big introduction fest, you're just straight into it.

Dan: it goes straight into it.

Sidey: Doesn't have a very memorable theme

Reegs: Oh, well I did quite like it. It's one of those nineties kind of jazzy numbers. Yeah, no, I enjoyed the

Dan: Well, you can hear it just

Sidey: no you

don't because the guy who does the editing didn't like it so it

Reegs: you don't. No,

Dan: you go That's what you get at this show

Sidey: Yeah,

But it is a strong recommend from me.

Dan: Yeah go for this I think you could dig this out and hey

Sidey: If you have a Paramount Plus subscription, you can watch the whole lot of it.

Dan: And there's like five seasons of

Sidey: I think it's a hundred and something episodes.

Reegs: Wow.

Dan: Right,

Sidey: Fill your boots.

Dan: Loads of

Cris: I did. Yes. I watched it just here on the, on the projector.

Reegs: you think?

Cris: It's, I've never seen this before and it's amazing. I, I, the only thing that I mean, this cartoon is happy. It doesn't send a strong message. It's not pretty, like you say, preaching to anyone and you're not going to break any clouds, but there was a guy dressed as a fried egg. So

Sidey: the way

Dan: Well, it, it seems to be one of those that the adults and the kids were both like this, this mix of jokes and, and stuff that will just keep the older viewer entertained as well. Bit Rug Ratish?

Sidey: No, because That's

shit.

Dan: rugrats decent.

We'll

Cris: Strong recommend.

Dan: agree.

Sidey: I don't know who's nominating.

Who is nominating?

Anyone

Dan: you said you had

Sidey: I do have noms, but I don't, it's not my turn.

Reegs: my turn. Ah, go on, let's, let's hear what

Sidey: Okay. Top five Libraries.

Midweeker is a movie called Hush.

Dan: Shhh.

Reegs: I think I've seen it.

Sidey: Death Woman.

And the main is A Quiet

Place.

Reegs: Okay,

Sidey: And

Reegs: What's the kids thing?

Sidey: It was, well, it was a choice of a Buffy the Vampire Slayer

episode,

Reegs: the one where they don't

Sidey: called, called Hush, Or, Dick and Dom in the Bungalow,

the library episode.

where they're playing bogeys

Reegs: Dick and Dom, yeah, that

Dan: don't know that one, but that sounds like an exciting

Sidey: can

Dan: Well, why not?

that.

Okay, well.

Sidey: in then.

Dan: Lock it in.

Sidey: But it is Easter weekend, so, I suppose there's more time off work to watch stuff, but

probably more family like activity stuff

to

Reegs: feeling it. Yeah, it's rough

Sidey: Yeah, Dan'll be alright.

Dan: Yeah,

Cris: He's going to struggle but

Sidey: but all that remains is to say, Sidey, signing out.

Reegs: out. Reegs is also not here anymore. Not

Sidey: lot

Dan: Dan's gone.
